Cranberry Furnace Building in Johnson City

This brick building is the only structure remaining of the Cranberry Iron Furnace in Johnson City. It was the blacksmith/grinding shop. While roaming the interior, I found this on one of the walls. It was in the concrete part of the wall below the bricks and looks like a space was formed in the concrete when the wall was built to make room for a blower or flywheel... or (?). Any suggestions are welcome.
