Covered Bridge Abutment
Face-on photo of the abutment. The opposite abutment
was right on the bank of the Little Doe in the corner where it
emptied into the Doe. It was built similar to this at one time,
but was dismantled and most of the stones hauled off when the
bridge was taken out. This one doesn't look 9 feet tall, does
it? Nicely built and over 110 years old. Also the wing walls
are not symmetrical. The one on the left, the upstream side is
very long. The one on the right, obviously the downstream side
is only about 15 feet long. The Doe River runs parallel with
the track and is only about 40 feet away and maybe 20 feet wide
and 10 inches deep. I started to wade across it to get to this
abutment a few days earlier, but noticed there was an electric
fence on this bank. Discretion won out that day. |
