Watauga River at Hound Ears

Shulls Mills is right behind us. The ET&WNC track followed the river here in this big flat meadow that's become Hound Ears golf course. On its way to Boone, the right-of-way ran right on the other side of those trees lining the bank of the Watauga River. During the flood of 1940 that permanently ended the railroad's run through here, the river flooded this large field and washed away the track.
