Valley Forge Bridge Abutment

Here's all that was left of the east abutment on the Hampton end of the ET&WNC Valley Forge bridges over the Doe River. The abutment on the other side of the Doe was still cut stone, but evidently this one had been remade with concrete at some point. You can still see the form marks. It would be interesting to know when that was done and why. The widening of the 19E highway bridge in the background is the reason for the removal of the old railroad bridge abutments and the removal of the old arched highway bridge. The double span railroad bridges here were second-hand standard gauge bridges, they didn't match and I'm not sure when they were put in. The old concrete arched highway bridge was built around 1915.
